TERSS Upgrade

A project within ACRES to update the recording and archiving sub-system at TERSS, has been completed. As the old hardware-oriented, proprietary design previously in use became increasingly difficult to maintain, it was replaced by a modern Unix server with a high-bandwidth ingest capability and a large tape storage robotics archive. The new system is an "open" design, using Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware.

This new system is capable of automatically extracting catalogue data.

The details of acquired satellite data (the metadata), along with browse images, are available on the ACRES digital catalogue system (on the Internet) shortly after the pass. Through the use of a quick look processor that can handle data from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) missions, browse images from "radar" data are available via the catalogue, a first in Australia.

Additionally, an upgrade has been introduced in the "receiver" area. A new demodulator has been installed that supports downlinks from Landsat 5, Landsat 7, as well as ERS 1 and 2 and Radarsat 1.
